Partner Post: 3 Condo Association Board Burnout Remedies

This post was republished with permission from BetterCondoLife.com.

Condo association board burnout can be inevitable, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be cured.  Burnt-out board members don’t perform as effectively and can even impact the entire board. You might be exhibiting signs of burnout, but that doesn’t mean you need to resign. Here are three condo association board burnout remedies that can help refresh and reinvigorate you so you can keep on serving your community.

1. Take a Sabbatical

The easiest solution is to take a sabbatical. This is best done in coordination with your fellow board members. Let them know that you’re overwhelmed and need a break. If you’ve served for a long period of time, they likely will be understanding. Figure out if you’ll be taking a total sabbatical (i.e., not even responding to board emails), or a partial sabbatical (skipping meetings or activities). Communicate and coordinate, and see if you feel better after the break.

2. Change Up Board Roles

Sometimes you need to shake up the monotony in order to reinvigorate yourself.  Perhaps you are the board treasurer and you’re tired of financial reports. Maybe you’ve been a master association liaison, or a committee liaison, and are done with the extra politics. Consider shaking up the roles and seeing if you can reassign work among board members to make things different. This condo association board burnout remedy may suddenly find you enjoying a new challenge instead of rehashing an old one.

3. Address Underlying Issues

Sometimes the cause of burnout is that some people aren’t pulling their weight.  This can contribute to feelings of resentment and hostility. The only way to address this is to tackle things head on and confront your fellow board members. It can be a tricky and socially awkward process, but if your burnout issues are being driven by slackers, the only way to fix it is to address the slackers.

Changing Things Up Can Fight Board Burnout

Sometimes resigning from your board post is the answer. But sometimes it’s worth trying these condo association board burnout remedies first. You likely joined your board for the right reasons and want to keep on contributing. Try these solutions first and see if you still enjoy serving your community. You may find that it helps you ensure that you’re confident with your decision to stay or resign – helping you lead a better condo life.
