FEATURED EBOOK: HOA History Book

For decades,  homeowners’ associations (HOAs) have operated in a standard format to serve communities across the country with:

  • A governing body. Each HOA is governed by a board of directors that enacts and enforces rules.
  • Mandatory membership. There are many kinds of associations all around the world, and for most, membership is voluntary. However, a defining characteristic of an HOA is mandatory and automatic membership for all homeowners. This mandate is necessary for an HOA to operate and to share the costs amongst a community equally.
  • Binding documents. All HOAs have a set of governing documents that include binding legal documents. These documents give an association authority to operate and hold owners responsible for paying any fees, fines, and assessments that accompany membership.

This format has been in place since the mid-twentieth century, but many do not know its origins or how it has evolved over the years. HOAs are the anchors for community because of that history, and it's important that people who play a part in the lifestyle are familiar with it.

For decades, Associa has had a front-row seat to  HOA history. In the "HOA History Book", we trace the industry back to the very first association and explore how things have progressed. From revolutionary laws to new association types, countless milestones have transformed how HOAs operate, govern, and serve residents.
