Here are some tips for what's on sale, what's in season and what chores are the smartest this season.

May

Buy: Annuals & herbs, organic potting soil, hanging baskets, hummingbird feeders

Eat: Asparagus, peas, lettuce, chard, and radishes

Do: Plant tomatoes, deadhead spring bulbs, mulch garden beds, plant up containers

June

Buy: Succulents & cacti and other tropical plants, summer bulbs, compost, organic lawn fertilizer

Eat: Strawberries, cherries, beets, spring cabbage, green onions

Do: Place houseplants outside, plant summer greens like kale, protect berries with netting

July

Buy: Insect repellent, fall crops like lettuce, spinach and arugula, organic pesticides

Eat: Berries, corn, greens, runner beans, and zucchini

Do: Deadhead perennial flowers, clean and fill birdbaths and bird feeders, prune fruit trees, water
