5 #3 KNOW THE LAW There are laws related to social media, and violating them can have serious repercussions. To avoid legal troubles, ensure all parties have a general understanding of acceptable postings. Boards should regularly monitor social media activities and confirm the types of legally compliant content are outlined in the social media policy. Key legal considerations include: • Photos. Whether photos of events, pets, houses, or structures, if you take a picture with your camera, do you legally have the right to post that photo? • Consent. Getting written consent is necessary when posting photos. Ask permission to take pictures at community events. • Sources. A community's online reputation should be trustworthy. That's why ensuring the information you share is credible is essential. When in doubt, ask an attorney to review your social media policy and verify you aren't breaking any laws. 7 6 5 4 3 2 8
