5 CAN I DISPLAY POLITICAL SIGNS ON MY HOA PROPERTY? It depends. Because it's a private organization, your HOA has the authority to impose and enforce the controls and standards it has in place to preserve and enhance the community. That might include political sign activity. While a community manager may help the HOA enforce its political sign policies, they're not allowed and don't have the authority to create or change what's in the governing documents. Rules, regulations, and deed restrictions are found within your community's governing documents. These community standards are meant to conserve the aesthetics of an area, protect home values, maintain the association's property, and more. When you buy a property within an HOA, you sign legal paperwork agreeing to the terms set within the governing documents. So, ultimately, if there are political sign restrictions in the governing documents, you're required to abide by them. Some sign restrictions your HOA may impose include: • Size of signs allowed • Number of signs allowed • Number of days before and after an election that signs can be displayed • Manner signs can be displayed • Locations of signs If you have further questions, reach out to your board of directors, association lawyer, or community manager. 7 6 5 4 8 9 10 3 C 11
