3. HOST A TOWN HALL
While forums at HOA meetings are a formal way to address the board, a town hall is a
more casual and conversational gathering where homeowners can discuss specific topics.
During a town hall, association members can engage with the board without the pressure
of parliamentary procedures or having to vote on the topic.
Although the HOA board president should chair a town hall meeting, the informal setting
promotes open dialogue and participation. When hosting a town hall, give homeowners
ample notice of the date, time, place, and what will be discussed. To get the most
engagement and valuable feedback, planned topics should be of interest to homeowners.
Best suited for feedback on:
• Possible amendments to governing documents
• HOA budget concerns
• How a community issue was resolved
It can be challenging to receive constructive criticism during a town hall, but board
members should see this as an opportunity to improve. Practice active listening, ask for
recommendations, and thank homeowners for their opinions.
