THE FIVE MOST COMMON
HOA RULES
While every association is unique, some regulations are more popular. Adopted by
many communities across North America, these are the most common HOA rules:
1. Architectural controls. Rules may dictate how homeowners can improve or
modify their properties. Examples include restricting exterior colors to certain
shades, requiring specific roofing materials, or limiting roof heights.
2. Lawn, porch, and holiday decorations. Items like unused bikes, toys, flags,
signs, or decorations may be prohibited from front-of-house display.
3. Home maintenance standards. Residents may be required to keep their grass
under a particular height or have a set number of trees in the front of their
house.
4. Noise limits. Noise policies may limit party music, construction noise, and
even barking dogs.
5. Pet restrictions. Pet-friendly and pet-free zones, leashing, and cleanup rules
apply in many HOAs.
