As a board member, it's part of your fiduciary duty to foster a cooperative spirit within your association. With a commitment to peace and harmony, take time to understand the details of the dispute as presented by each side. To facilitate cooperation: Identify the root cause: Review all written materials and engage in conversation to identify the underlying issues causing the conflict. Work together to clear up any misunderstandings and get to the heart of the matter. Listen actively: Listen to understand the needs and interests of the parties involved. When a resident is speaking: • Listen carefully and never interrupt. • Ask questions when appropriate. • Use similar wording when responding. • Have a reasonable understanding of the issue. Seek common ground: Focus on finding common ground. It's easier to reach a resolution when everyone can agree on something.
