Social media, Artificial Intelligence, drones, mobile-first technology? These concepts were all unheard of when I founded Associa back in 1979. Now, nearly 40 years later, these once foreign ideas are influencing how communities function at their core and disrupting the industry as we know it. In fact, they are the driving force behind many of our current community duties, activities, interactions and even legislation. Right now, community associations are positioned for big changes and big changes are often glacial — that is, a lot happens under the surface that can go undetected before the impact is realized. I don't want our clients to be caught off guard. That's why I'm pleased to introduce this guide which provides community leaders with insights about what's happening now so that they can see the headwinds and be well-equipped to adapt in the future. Inside, our leaders have shared what they forecast to be the biggest shifts on the horizon for communities based on current trends and their own observations, and they've also included practical tips to help you prepare for what's in store. Just as Associa was the first management company to introduce "cutting edge" IBM System 36 technology in 1983 to support our clients, we intend to lead the industry in supporting our clients as new changes emerge. When community leaders know what's around the corner, and use that information when making decisions, your board is better equipped to fulfill your fiduciary duty and make your community a place homeowners are proud to call home. Thank you for your volunteer service to your communities. We hope this resource helps you prepare for even more success in the future. Sincerely, John J. Carona Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Associa A Note from Our Founder From the year John Carona founded Associa to the day he penned his landmark book, In the Common Interest: Embracing the New Community, Associa has been rooted in our commitment to help communities flourish. Below, John shares his thoughts on what the future holds for community associations and how Associa is making sure we're up to the challenge of helping homeowners get there.
