2. Complete common maintenance items for a safe event. Bringing the community together for an event is a great way for neighbours to get to know each other in an informal, easy going setting. When I host, I bring the focus to my barbecue - my son and I have even held a competition to see which of us has the best steak marinade recipe. It's a great chance to relax and spend time with friends. Before you plan your next community event, take a look at these 5 items to keep your space looking great, and more importantly, make it safe for your guests. Lighting Spot Check The right outdoor lighting can help beautify your community once the sun goes down. If you're hosting an evening event, before the big day, check all your outdoor lights to make sure everything works and is properly illuminated, including all entryways and pathways. If the party goes on after dark, it's important that your guests will be able to safely navigate the space without concern for trips and falls. Check on All Safety Systems This should be regular maintenance whether you're hosting an event or not. Make sure your safety systems are all working properly. Test any smoke detectors (this should be done monthly), and replace the batteries at least twice a year (I change mine when the clocks change). Have a fire extinguisher, and keep it in plain view - away from stoves and heating appliances. Ensure a first aid kit is well stocked, and all items are still in good condition. Replace any expired products, and keep it in an easily accessible area for guests. Getting your next event ready takes more than picking the right food and decorations. Take a walk around your space to make it look good, and keep it safe for your guests. That's making it right. Fire Up the Grill There are a few safety precautions to keep in mind before you first light the grill. Take a look at your propane tank, if it looks rusty or damaged - it's time to replace it. Check to make sure the barbecue hose is still in good shape. If it's cracked, don't use the grill until you get a new part. Broken hoses that are leaking gas could ignite and cause big flames. Pool Safety Is your pool and hot tub area safe? For wet surfaces, especially with kids moving around, you want to keep the risk of slips and falls to a minimum. Installing a non-slip surround for your pools and hot tubs, such as anti-slip paints, cork, or non-slip tiles should be added to keep your guests safe. There are products available that absorb minimal solar heat, don't need a lot of maintenance, and keep a natural look around your pool. By Professional Contractor and TV host Mike Holmes
