PREPARE YOUR HOME If your house is in danger of being hit by a hurricane, protecting windows and sliding glass doors is almost always the number one thing you can do to ensure you'll have a livable house if the worst happens. Stay calm and set a good example for your family members, friends and neighbors. Gas heating and cooling systems must be turned off. Lock your home. Heavy plywood or metal shutters are vital to protecting your home. Experts recommend using 3/4 inch plywood and drilling screw holes 18 inches apart all around it. Don't wait until a storm is bearing down to buy the plywood, because by then it's almost surely too late. HURRICANE CLASSIFICATION To be classified as a hurricane, a tropical cyclone must have maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph.
