4. LEAD BY EXAMPLE
As a board member, you have the power to create the positive environment that
people enjoy being in. Here are three ways that you can influence interaction
through your actions:
• Ensure a comfortable environment. Residents are more likely to participate in a
community when they feel comfortable and know they'll be treated with respect.
Whether they're volunteering or just attending a meeting or event, welcome them
with open arms, and let them know they're appreciated.
• Stay organized and efficient. When board meetings are disorganized or board
members show up unprepared, it discourages people from coming back. If you
want residents to attend meetings, you must prove that you're efficient and
respectful of their time. Always schedule meetings in advance, have an agenda,
and prepare for questions ahead of time.
• Be open to suggestions. Don't immediately dismiss suggestions from
community members. If they suggest something that has already been done or
didn't work, provide background information, and work together to find a new
solution. People want to be heard and feel like they're making a difference.
