FAQS ABOUT SERVING ON
THE BOARD
How much do board members get paid?
In almost all cases, HOA board officers are volunteers and do not receive
compensation. However, serving the community as a board member can be
an exciting and rewarding leadership role for the right person.
How many board members should we have?
While most HOA boards have a president, vice president, secretary, and
treasurer, some communities require additional roles to run the association
effectively. Depending on the size and needs of your community, you may also
have a member-at-large or other officers on your board.
Can family members be on a nonprofit board?
Family members can serve together on a nonprofit board in most states.
However, you must refer to your state laws and HOA governing documents to
see if there are exceptions or restrictions for your community. Also, consider
possible conflicts of interest or a perception of favoritism if family members
work together.
Do HOA board members have to be certified?
Some states require HOA board members to be certified. To earn certification,
they must complete a course that covers important board basics, including
legal compliance, accounting, conflict resolution, and risk management.
