04 ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUAL SECURITY ACTIONS Unfortunately, with higher volumes of package deliveries and vacant homes from vacation, crime rates tend to increase during the holiday season. Remind residents of ways to stay safe by communicating security tips in your community's app, website, or newsletter. Some tips to communicate include: • Enhance Surveillance Around the Home: Encourage residents to install security cameras, particularly around home entry points. • Increase Lighting and Visibility: Residents should consider leaving an interior light on when departing for a holiday trip. Light timers can also be set to turn on and off automatically so the home appears occupied. • Plan for Package Delivery Accordingly: Picking up mail or package deliveries promptly is critical to deter theft by porch pirates. Residents should request deliveries only when they're home or, if possible, use package lockers. • Join the Neighborhood Watch Program: Residents can join a neighborhood watch group to report suspicious activities and achieve collective safety. • Secure Entrances and Exits: Residents should lock doors, even when they're home, and be cautious about sharing entrance codes or keys with others. 6 5 4 3 7 8 9 10 2
