03 PROTECT COMMUNITY STRUCTURES AND COMPONENTS Winters can have a harsh impact on community infrastructure, damaging pipes, roofs, roadways, and equipment. Protecting these components from the season's elements helps prevent costly repairs and harmful conditions. Make sure you accomplish these six tasks: 1. Clear Drains and Gutters: Heavy snow and ice cause increased water flow through storm drains and gutter systems. Flush drains and remove leaves, branches, and other debris from gutters to ensure proper drainage and combat flooding. 2. Trim Trees and Branches: Trees near structures should be trimmed so branches don't fall due to heavy winds or ice. Consult an arborist if necessary, especially if you're considering tree removal. 3. Inspect Roofs: Weak spots in home and amenity roofs can create major issues if snowfall accumulates. Clear any debris and schedule inspections to check for hidden issues. 4. Protect Pipes: Frozen pipes can burst, causing significant water damage. To prevent freezing, disconnect hoses, insulate outdoor faucets, and weatherproof exposed pipes. 5. Inspect Heating Systems: Call on the professionals to test heating systems and inspect chimneys to help avoid fires or malfunctions. A professional chimney sweep can clear soot, remove critters and nests, and inspect the space for other obstructions. An HVAC specialist can check electrical connections, safety systems, and leaking seals to preserve heating system functionality. 6. Prep Roads and Walkways: Hire a contractor to prepare roads and walkways for winter. Whether they use chemicals like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride or stick to a salt and sand method to melt ice and make surfaces less slippery, ensuring safe walking and driving conditions for community members is necessary. 6 5 4 3 7 8 9 10 2
