6 HOW DO YOU REFER TO A COMMUNITY'S LEADERSHIP BODY? Most managed communities are governed by a group of community leaders. Here's what this group of leaders is called. UNITED STATES An HOA's board of directors is a group of elected volunteers authorized to act on the community's behalf, creating and enforcing guidelines, setting goals, and protecting resident rights. In the United States, these are required, and members of the board are often referred to as board members or board directors. CANADA Most Canadian condo associations call their leadership body a board of directors, too. However, in British Columbia, Canada, a strata council acts as the managing body for the strata corporation. This leadership entity, comprised of elected volunteers, makes decisions to enable the strata corporation to run smoothly and within the law's Strata Property Act. MEXICO In Mexico, communities appoint a legal administrator, usually a civil association, to act as their legal business. Because managed communities are civil associations, Mexican law doesn't require a board of directors. However, homeowners typically elect a board of directors to operate on behalf of the civil association. Typically, only the president role is necessary and the other members fall under board officers. 7 6 5 4 8 9 10 11 3 C
