9. You're required to pay even if you don't use
the common areas.
Once you move into a home that belongs to an HOA, you're locked into paying the fees
regardless of how much you plan on using the shared parks, pools, and other areas. Ask
about required HOA payments before buying a home to get a better understanding of
what is and isn't included with those payments.
When your HOA requests an assessment payment, you're legally required to pay it. In
some extreme circumstances, it's conceivable that an HOA will place a lien on your
property to collect a back payment. However, your HOA should work with you to make
sure debts are paid in a way that is mutually beneficial to the resident and
the association.
