Should board meetings be cancelled?
Boards should consider alternatives to in-person events,
elections, or meetings to reduce the risk of exposure to
residents. Virtual meetings, conference calls, or postponement
are all options for balancing the need to meet with the
concern for public health.
Every community has different powers and requirements
regarding virtual meetings. Always err on the side of safety,
follow directives of local health authorities, and consult
counsel to ensure compliance with state and provincial laws.
What happens if a resident
gets infected?
First, any information about a resident infection must
be confirmed and not based on rumor. If a person has
a confirmed infection, local health authorities will guide
impacted businesses or communities.
Boards have an obligation to inform other residents and
should consider adopting a policy for how to handle credible
notice from a resident who is or may be infected. However,
due to sensitivities and privacy concerns, counsel should be
contacted for assistance.
