WILL
YOUR
BOARD
AND
MANAGEMENT
TEAM
BE
ABLE
TO
EASILY
ENFORCE
THE
RULE?
Every good rule will have a practical enforcement
plan. Rules that aren't easily enforced are
vulnerable to being ignored and broken by
homeowners. Without proper enforcement
protocols, the authority of your board may be
called into question. Do your due diligence to
prevent this from happening to you.
When considering potential policy enforcement,
evaluate your current structure for rules, fees, and
fines. Make sure the rules you already have in place
are being fairly and uniformly enforced.
Don't forget that your time is precious. If a new
rule requires an unreasonable amount of time and
effort to enforce, then it may not be appropriate
for your community at this time. For example, if
you're considering a new weight limit for dogs,
think through how it would be enforced. Do you
or other members of the board plan on weighing
each dog individually? If yes, ask yourself if that
the best use of your time.
Asking yourself tough questions upfront will help
you create the kind of rules that can benefit your
association and your residents for years to come.
