IS THE NEW RULE CLEAR, AND CAN IT BE EASILY FOLLOWED BY YOUR RESIDENTS? Often, the reason association rules are ignored is because they're unclear or confusing to the homeowners. Most of the owners living within your community are trying their best to be a good neighbor and member of the HOA, and the rules should support, not hinder, their efforts to live within the association's expectations. When considering a newly proposed rule, think several steps ahead. Always consider what tools, resources, and details will need to be provided to help make following new rules easier on your residents. For example, if you're considering a new rule about paint colors for front doors, here are some additional questions you may want to ask first: • Are we providing a list of approved colors? • Are those colors available locally for purchase? • Is the approval process for door colors straightforward and well thought out? • Does the rule explain things in plain language that is easy to understand? • How will the board communicate the new rule to homeowners?
