Partner Post: The Best Interior Decorating Tips for Beginners

Decorating a new space can be intimidating. With so many blank walls and so much open space, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and not know where to begin. Luckily, we’ve rounded up some of the best interior design tips and tricks for beginners.

1.    Have a plan.

Before you buy anything, have a plan! Set a budget, get some inspiration online, or even make a mood board with this easy tool to reference when you feel lost or overwhelmed.

2.    Concentrate on one room at a time.

After you have the essentials for each room (a bed, couch, dining table, etc.), pick a space and concentrate on accessorizing and decorating one room at a time. The more you focus, the more satisfied you’ll be with the outcome.

3.    Choose a color scheme.

Choose a few colors and stick with them. Pick some basic colors and some fun accent colors to keep in mind when you want to buy new pieces to keep the room cohesive. Not sure which color palette choose? Try using this color scheme generator.

4.    Add contrast.

Just because you stick to a color scheme, it doesn’t mean the room has to be boring! Add contrast to rooms with different fabrics, patterns and sizes.

5.    Hang mirrors.

Mirrors not only make for great (and easy) wall décor, but they can also add depth to a room and make it appear larger.

6.    Don’t forget rugs.

If you feel like something is missing in a room, a rug might be your answer. Rugs add warmth, and you can have fun with a variety of colors, sizes and prints. Also, rugs are less of a commitment than carpet because they can easily be replaced.

7.    Plants are a must.

It’s a fact that greenery perks up any space. If you have a green thumb, obviously use the real deal, but if not, fake plants will suffice. Use some fun vases and mix it up with a variety of wildflowers and air-cleaning plants or get trendy with cacti and succulents. If you have pets, be sure to check the ASPCA directory to make sure the plants you choose won’t harm your furry friends.

8.    Use bins.

Clutter makes any space looks messy and disorganized. With cute bins, you can hide your clutter, and it’ll be easier for people to focus on your décor. Need some inspiration? Check out these ideas.

9.    Add some personality.

Don’t recreate a room you see online. It may look great, but it won’t feel like your home. Add in artwork, photos and accessories that you love for a personalized look and feel.

10.  Take your time.

One big mistake beginners make is thinking that it all pieces must be chosen, purchased and designed all at once. Be thoughtful with your décor and don’t buy things just to fill up space – really search for pieces that you love and will last.
