Partner Post: 5 Out-of-the-Box Events Your Community Should Host This Summer

If it’s been a while since your last block party, then it’s time to ring in the season and plan your next summer get together. Don’t know what type of event to host? We’ve got you covered with five creative ideas.

  1. Get Crafty.

Holding a community arts and crafts festival is an excellent way for people to get involved, share their creative side, and do some good. Booths can be set up to share anything from pottery and paintings to jewelry and knitted wears. Ask participating artists to contribute pieces for a raffle, and you can donate proceeds to a local charity.

  1. Swap & Save.

Most people have unwanted and unused stuff taking up space in their closets, cabinets, and garages. Instead of throwing these things out, hold a community swap meet. Participants are encouraged to swap their old items for something else that they want. People aren’t required to bring anything to participate, and all neighbors should be invited to come, have fun, and take what they need. These events help people declutter their homes and save thousands of unwanted items from the landfill.

  1. Garden Gang.

Every community has a nearby park, walking trail, or another area that could use some love. Organize a gardening group to get together and tackle the problem together. Come ready with gloves, shovels, and trash bags so you can pull weeds, pick up trash, and help the area look its best. Bring some cold drinks and snacks to keep volunteers hydrated and happy.

  1. Movie Night.

Nothing says summer like watching one of your favorite flicks under the stars. Make, rent, or buy an outdoor screen that you can set up at a park, in a backyard, or even at the end of your cul-de-sac. Invite moviegoers to bring their favorite snacks and organizers can pitch in for popcorn and drinks to share. Depending on your crowd size and local laws, make sure you have permission to show your movie selections.

  1. Pop Quiz.

Flex your knowledge muscle and hold a community quiz night. Try to select a topic that will appeal to your audience and plan in enough time to gather the Q&A. If you aren’t a pop culture encyclopedia, don’t sweat, just search online for popular quiz questions that will keep everyone guessing.
